What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word that translates to “the science of life”. It was first developed by the ancient Vedic civilization and further advanced over time, now being practiced around the world. Most modern day Ayurvedic practice focuses on the daily practices for general wellness.
Individualized Ayurveda – The Doshas
A key component of Ayurveda is the focus on individual energy types, or
doshas, and how their needs are different. Individuals become balanced when they follow specific practices in accordance with their dosha. It is believed that disease arises when these doshas are out of balance. The three main doshas are associated with elements and impact the body, mind, and soul.
The VATA DOSHA is associated with air and space. The Vata dosha governs senses, emotions, and the mind. It is responsible for an individual’s creativity, enthusiasm, speed, and agility. An individual who is the Vata type may display asymmetrical features and may be taller/shorter than the average person. A Vata type does not gain weight easily and may struggle with consistent sleep. They are typically a fast talker, creative, and adaptable. When Vata’s are balanced they are energetic, adaptable, and enjoy taking initiative. Vata’s in balance are also wonderful communicators.
The PITTA DOSHA is associated with fire and water. The Pitta dosha governs the ability to digest food, emotions, and ideas. It is responsible for intelligence, courage, and vitality. An individual who is the Pitta type may display a medium build with warm skin. A Pitta type is typically sensitive to heat, sweats easily, and endures deep, but short, sleeps with romantic dreams. They are typically courageous, strong, and driven. When Pitta’s are balanced they are bright, warm, and friendly leaders.
The KAPHA DOSHA is associated with earth and water. The Kapha dosha governs nourishment, hydration, and stability to the body. It is responsible for emotion, love, devotion, and faith. An individual who is the Kapha type may be of shorter stature, have difficulty losing weight, and sleeps often with little to no dreams. A Kapha type may be sensitive to cold and have good immunity. They are often content, conservative, and loving. Kapha’s are steady, loyal, and consistent when they follow practices that allow for balance.
